Season after Pentecost: Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Alternate first reading and Psalm

God Did Not Create Death

12Do not bring on your own death by sinful actions. 13God did not invent death, and when living creatures die, it gives him no pleasure. 14He created everything so that it might continue to exist, and everything he created is wholesome and good. There is no deadly poison in it. No, death does not rule this world, 15for God's justice does not die.

16Ungodly people have brought death on themselves by the things they have said and done. They yearn for death as if it were a lover. They have gone into partnership with death, and it is just what they deserve.

Wicked Thinking

1Wicked people are wrong when they say to themselves, “Our life is short and full of sorrow, and when its end comes, there is no escape. No one has ever been known to come back from the world of the dead.

A Plot against Jeremiah's Life

18The LORD informed me of the plots that my enemies were making against me. 19I was like a trusting lamb taken out to be killed, and I did not know that it was against me that they were planning evil things. They were saying, “Let's chop down the tree while it is still healthy; let's kill him so that no one will remember him any more.”

20Then I prayed, “Almighty LORD, you are a just judge; you test people's thoughts and feelings. I have placed my cause in your hands; so let me watch you take revenge on these people.”

A Prayer for Protection from Enemies

1Save me by your power, O God;

set me free by your might!

2Hear my prayer, O God;

listen to my words!

3Proud men are coming to attack me;

cruel men are trying to kill me —

men who do not care about God.

4But God is my helper.

The Lord is my defender.

5May God use their own evil to punish my enemies.

He will destroy them because he is faithful.

6I will gladly offer you a sacrifice, O LORD;

I will give you thanks

because you are good.

7You have rescued me from all my troubles,

and I have seen my enemies defeated.
