Season after Pentecost: Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost

First reading and Psalm

1If you have to choose between a good reputation and great wealth, choose a good reputation.

2The rich and the poor have this in common: the LORD made them both.

Proverbs 22:1-2GNBOpen in Bible reader

8If you sow the seeds of injustice, disaster will spring up, and your oppression of others will end.

9Be generous and share your food with the poor. You will be blessed for it.

The First Saying

22Don't take advantage of the poor just because you can; don't take advantage of those who stand helpless in court. 23The LORD will argue their case for them and threaten the life of anyone who threatens theirs.

Proverbs 22:22-23GNBOpen in Bible reader

The Security of God's People

1Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion,

which can never be shaken, never be moved.

2As the mountains surround Jerusalem,

so the LORD surrounds his people

now and for ever.

3The wicked will not always rule over the land of the righteous;

if they did, the righteous themselves might do evil.

4LORD, do good to those who are good,

to those who obey your commands.

5But when you punish the wicked,

punish also those who abandon your ways.

Peace be with Israel!
