The Day of Atonement The Scapegoat Observing the Day of Atonement
The Day of Atonement
This day was a way that the sins of an individual could be forgiven. It started with the high priest expiating himself, then his family and then his house. Two goats were chosen – one was offered as a sin offering while on the other goat, all the wickedness of the people of Israel was placed and this goat was then chased into the desert, away from the people.
This atonement was for all the sins in their totality – even the otherwise unforgivable violations of the Law, because God forgives!
