Preserved in Jesus Christ – Day 13

Going Home – Part II

Bible text(s)

Acts 1

10They still had their eyes fixed on the sky as he went away, when two men dressed in white suddenly stood beside them 11and said, “Galileans, why are you standing there looking up at the sky? This Jesus, who was taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way that you saw him go to heaven.”

This message still applies to us today. Jesus is coming back. The disciples realised there was work to do. The Bible tells us that they returned to Jerusalem and went upstairs to the room where they were staying (Acts 1:12-13).

The Bible does not say whether this was the same upper room where they had eaten the last supper and where the disciples had locked themselves in for fear of the Jews, after the death of Jesus. If it was the same room, it must have conjured up beautiful memories. For that was where the resurrected Jesus had said to them, “Peace be with you” and where doubting Thomas had felt the wounds on Jesus and said, “My Lord and my God.”

The venue is not important. What is vital is what the disciples did. They prayed harmoniously and constantly, together with the women, Mary, the mother of Jesus and his brothers, to be empowered by the Holy Spirit.

It is important that we should follow their example and pray that we too receive the gift of God, to be empowered by the Holy Spirit to be witnesses to our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus has risen from the dead and he will return to earth. In the meanwhile, his followers, you and I, have work to do.
