Psalms 37

23The LORD guides people in the way they should go

and protects those who please him.

Psalms 37:23GNBOpen in Bible reader

A few months ago, a friend of mine and her husband’s dreams for their unmarried 19-year-old daughter were shattered when she arrived home with the news of her pregnancy. There were many tears.

Now, just a month away from becoming grandparents, they view the situation differently. They are grateful for the gift of life, as well as for the opportunity to develop a closer relationship with their daughter. My friend’s husband describes the situation as follows: “We don’t always know or like the type of packaging our gifts come in, but the gift itself is still a blessing.”

Change is rarely easy – whether in the workplace, within relationships or during different seasons of our children’s lives. It often fills us with fear of the unknown or frustration with the adjustments required. Most notably, it pushes us out of our comfort zones. Yet, in retrospect, it may be one of the most transformative experiences we encounter. It fosters personal growth, alters our perspective on life and frequently reveals aspects of God’s character previously unknown to us.

In Psalm 37:23-24, we read: “The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.”

Let us embrace seasons of change, rather than wishing them away, for God is at work. He determines our course and provides support. Even if we falter, we can trust that he will lift us up.

Prayer: Father God, thank you for your goodness. Please help me not to wish away my current season but to live fully, knowing that you carry me. I ask this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen
