The people who built the wall
1The high-priest, Eliashib, and the other priests started to build the wall. They first built the Sheep Gate. They consecrated it and then they put in the doors. Then they built the wall to the Tower of 100 Soldiers. They consecrated it and then they built the wall to the Tower of Hananel.
2The men from Jericho built the next part of the city wall and Zakkur, son of Imri, built the part next to that. 3The sons of Hassenaah built the Fish Gate. They put the poles on the walls and put in the doors with metal bolts and thick poles as locks. 4Meremoth, son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, repaired the next part of the wall, and Meshullam, son of Berekiah, son of Meshezabel, repaired the next part, then Zadok, son of Baana, repaired the next part. 5The men from Tekoa repaired the next part of the wall but their leaders did not want to work hard for their Lord.
6Joiada, son of Paseah, and Meshullam, son of Besodeiah, repaired the Old Gate. They put in the poles on the walls and the doors, with locks and bolts. 7Melatiah from Gibeon, Jadon from Meronoth, and the men from Gibeon and Mizpah repaired the next part of the wall as far as the house of the governor of the lands west of the Euphrates River. 8Uzziel, son of Harhaiah, a goldsmith, repaired the next part and Hananiah, a perfume maker, repaired the next part. They repaired the wall of Jerusalem as far as the Wide Wall. 9Rephaiah, son of Hur, repaired the next part of the wall. Rephaiah was the official who ruled over half of a district of Jerusalem. 10Jedaiah, son of Harumaph, repaired the next part near the other side of his house. Hattush, son of Hashabneiah, repaired the part next to that.
11Malkijah, son Harim, and Hasshub, son of Pahath-Moab, repaired the next part as far as the Oven Tower. 12Shallum, son of Hallohesh, built the next part with his daughters. Shallum was the official who ruled over the other half of that district of Jerusalem. 13Hanun and the people of the town of Zanoah repaired the Valley Gate. They built the walls of the gate and they put in the doors with locks and bolts. They also built the part of the wall as far as the Dung Gate. That part of the wall was 1 000 cubits long.
14Malkijah, son of Rekab, repaired the Dung Gate. Malkijah was the officer who ruled over the Beth-Hakkerem part of Jerusalem. He built the walls of the gate and he put in the doors, with locks and bolts. 15Shallun, son of Kol-Hozeh, repaired the Fountain Gate. Shallun was the official who ruled over Mizpah, one of the parts of the city. He built the walls of the gate and he put up the roof and doors, with locks and bolts. He also built the wall at the Pool of Siloam, from the king's garden to the stairs that come down from the City of David.
16Nehemiah, son of Azbuk, repaired the wall near the graves of David's family and the pool that the people had built. It was at the rooms where the special men of the king lived. Nehemiah was the official who ruled over half of Beth-Zur, one of the parts of Jerusalem. 17The Levites repaired the next part of the wall. Rehum, son of Bani, repaired the first part. Hashabiah repaired the next part. Hashabiah was the official who ruled over half of Keilah, one of the parts of the city. 18The Levite Binnui, son of Henadad, repaired the next part. Binnui was the official who ruled over the other half of Keilah, one of the parts of the city.
19Ezer, son of Jeshua, repaired another part of the wall, the part near the road to the weapon room up to the corner of the wall. Ezer was the officer who ruled over Mizpah, a part of the city. 20Baruch, son of Zabbai, worked very hard to repair another part of the wall, from the corner of the wall to the gate of the house of Eliashib, the high-priest.
21Meremoth, son of Uriah, son of Hakkoz, repaired another part, from the gate at Eliashib's house to the end of his house. 22The priests who lived nearby repaired the next part of the wall. 23Benjamin and Hasshub repaired the part near their house and Azariah, son of Maaseiah, son of Ananiah, repaired the part near his house. 24Binnui, son of Henadad, repaired another part of the wall, from the house of Azariah to the corner of the wall. 25Palal, son of Uzai, repaired the part of the wall near the corner and the tower. This is the tower from which one can see over the palace to the courtyard of the guards. Pedaiah, son of Parosh, 26and the temple-servants who lived on the hill of the Ophel repaired the part of the wall to the Water Gate, east of the tower. 27The people of Tekoa repaired another part of the wall, from the big tower to the wall of Ophel.
28The priests repaired the part of the wall above the Horse Gate. Each man repaired the part of the wall nearest to his house. 29Zadok, son of Immer, repaired the part of the wall near his house and Shemaiah, son of Shekaniah, repaired the next part. Shemaiah was the guard at the gate east of the temple. 30Hananiah, son of Shelemiah, and Hanun, the 6th son of Zalaph, repaired another part of the wall. Meshullam, son of Berekiah, repaired the part nearest to his room. 31Malkijah, a goldsmith, repaired the part of the wall to the house of the temple-servants and the merchants. This was the part of the wall next to the Inspection Gate to the upper room at the corner of the wall. 32The goldsmiths and the merchants repaired the part of the wall between the upper room and the Sheep Gate.
