Walking our dogs is sometimes a mixed blessing, as we know each one’s mindset and the potential for drama on the road. A good walk often rather depends on how well they respond, or can be controlled, when confronted by other dogs and not on how beautiful the countryside is, or how pleasant the weather. For us, the best walks are those in which we are able to peacefully walk together, enjoy our surroundings, and return home without incident. But that’s not what real life is about; we have to embrace difficulties with the good.
There is a disconnect between the mind and reality which is only redeemed when the heart, mind and will are in sync with God. It was Daniel’s relationship with God that enabled him to be balanced, and in his ‘right mind’, as he served Nebuchadnezzar and Darius in a foreign land, and also interpreted a serious sign for Belshazzar. His exemplary qualities were highly valued by these foreign kings. When tested by the administrators, “They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.” (Daniel 6:4) In our world it’s not easy to find someone in service whose exemplary qualities bring honour to God.
Paul talks about the need to renew the mind and be transformed, which requires conscious action over time. It is through the mind that the Enemy attacks to charm and deceive, making truth appear false and lies attractive, until rebellious thoughts about faith, and well thought out arguments and theories cause confusion. In the Garden of Eden he asked Eve, “Did God really say… “ (Genesis 3:1) and to Lot’s wife, (Genesis 19:26) “You deserve just one last look … and to you and me, “You are too weak.” We can only overcome him when we are putting our faith into action and carrying out God’s, “good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2)
God redeems our minds and enables us to have no disconnect between the mind and reality; recognising “the pattern of this world” clearly, enables us to know and choose obedience to, “his good, pleasing and perfect will, as Daniel did. The time will come when we will see other things more clearly too, but till then, we can walk by faith in obedience.
Prayer: Lord, You make the weak mind strong, the poor heart rich, and You turn disadvantages into advantages when we follow Your Truth. Give us the strength and inspiration to make a difference in this world and to bring honour and glory to You. Amen
