The Judah tribe
1The sons of Judah were Perez, Hezron, Karmi, Hur and Shobal. 2Reaiah, son of Shobal, was the father of Jahath and Jahath was the father of Ahumai and Lahad. They were the Zorah families.
3Etam was the father of Jezreel, Ishma and Idbash. Their sister's name was Hazzelelponi.
4Penuel was the father of Gedor and Ezer was the father of Hushah. They were the descendants of Hur, the firstborn son of Ephratah and the father of Bethlehem. 5Ashhur was the father of Tekoa. He had 2 wives whose names were Helah and Naarah. 6Naarah and Ashur had sons. They were Ahuzzam, Hepher, Temeni and Haahashtari. 7Ashhur and Helah's sons were Zereth, Zohar and Ethnan. 8Koz was the father of Anub and Hazzobebah, and of the families of Aharhel. Aharhel was the son of Harum.
9Jabez was more important than his brothers. His mother named him Jabez and she said: ‘I am giving him this name because I had a lot of pain when he was born.’
10Jabez prayed to the God of Israel and he said: ‘I pray that You will bless me and that You will give me a lot of land. I pray that You will be with me and protect me, so that I will be safe and have no trouble.’
And God gave Jabez what he prayed and asked for.
11Kelub was the brother of Shuhah. Kelub was the father of Mehir and Mehir was the father of Eshton. 12Eshton was the father of Beth-Rapha, Paseah and Tehinnah. Tehinnah was the father of Ir-Nahash. They were the Rekah people.
13The sons of Kenaz were Othniel and Seraiah and the sons of Othniel were Hathath and Meonothai. 14Meonothai was the father of Ophrah, and Seraiah was the father of Joab. Joab was the father of the people of the Valley of Special Workers. They were artisans. 15Caleb was the son of Jephunneh and the sons of Caleb were Iru, Elah and Naam. Elah was the father of Kenaz.
16The sons of Jehallelel were Ziph, Ziphah, Tiria and Asarel. 17The sons of Ezrah were Jether, Mered, Epher and Jalon. Mered was the father of Miriam, Shammai and Ishbah. Ishbah was the father of the people of Eshtemoa. 18Mered and his wife from Judah were the parents of Jered, Heber and Jekuthiel. Jered was the father of the people of Gedor, Heber was the father of Sokoh and Jekuthiel was the father of Zanoah. They were the children of Mered and his wife Bithiah, who was a daughter of Pharaoh. 19Naham's sister was married to Hodiah and they were the parents of Keilah, Garmite, Eshtemoa and Maakah. 20The sons of Shimon were Amnon, Rinnah, Ben-Hanan and Tilon. The sons of Ishi were Zoheth and Ben-Zoheth. 21Shelah was the son of Judah and Shelah's sons were Er and Laadah. Er was the father of Lekah. Laadah was the father of Mareshah and the families who worked with linen. They were from the town of Beth-Ashbea. 22Shelah's other sons were Jokim, the men of Kozeba, Joash, Saraph and Jashubi-Lehem.
The land of Moab then belonged to Saraph. The names of all these people were in the old name lists of the families. 23These people were potters from the towns of Netaim and Gederah. They lived in those towns and worked for the king.
The Simeon tribe
24The descendants of Simeon were Nemuel, Jamin, Jarib, Zerah and Shaul. 25Shaul was the father of Shallum, Shallum was the father of Mibsam, and Mibsam was the father of Mishma. 26The descendants of Mishma were Hammuel, his son Zakkur and his son Shimei. 27Shimei had 16 sons and 6 daughters, but his brothers did not have many children. The descendants of Judah were more than all of their families together. 28The Simeon tribe lived in the towns of Beersheba, Moladah, Hazar-Shual, 29Bilhah, Ezem, Tolad, 30Bethuel, Hormah, Ziklag, 31Beth-Markaboth, Hazar, Susim, Beth-Biri and Shaaraim. These towns belonged to the Simeon tribe until David became king. 32They also had 5 smaller towns. The towns were Etam, Ain, Rimmon, Token and Ashan. 33They also had all the villages around the town of Baalath. This is where the Simeon tribe lived and their names are written in the name list.
34The other leaders of the families were Meshobab, Jamlech, Joshah, son of Amaziah, 35Joel, Jehu, son of Joshibiah, son of Seraiah, son of Asiel, 36and also Elioenai, Jaakobah, Jeshohaiah, Asaiah, Adiel, Jesimiel, Benaiah, 37Ziza, son of Shiphi, son of Allon, son of Jedaiah, son of Shimri, son of Shemaiah.
38The names of these men are written in the name list and they were leaders of their families. Their families became very big. 39They went to the town of Gedor, east of the valley. They looked for grass for their sheep and goats 40and they found fertile fields and green grass. The land was open on all sides and it was peaceful and safe. The people of the land of Ham had lived there before 41but in the time when King Hezekiah of Judah ruled, the people of the Simeon tribe went to live there. Their names are written in the name list. They defeated the people of Ham and took their land. They also defeated the Meunite people who were there. They killed all of those people and they went to live in their land because there was green grass for their sheep and goats. 42More than 500 of the Simeon men went to Mount Seir. Their leaders were Pelatiah, Neariah, Rephaiah and Uzziel, sons of Ishi. 43They killed the Amalekites who had escaped and they still live there today.
