Jesus chases_evil_spirits_out of a man
(Also in Matthew 8:28-34; Luke 8:26-39)
1Jesus and his disciples went to the other side of Lake Galilee into the land of the Gerasenes. 2When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil_spirit quickly came to Jesus. He came from the graves. 3This man lived among the graves and no one could tie him, not even with a chain. 4People often tied his hands and his feet but he was so strong that he broke the iron chains from his feet. No one could hold him. 5He was always among the graves and he went to the mountains every day and night. He shouted and he cut himself with stones. 6Jesus was far from him but the man saw Jesus and he ran to Jesus and he knelt before Him. 7-8Jesus said: ‘Evil_spirit, come out of the man.’ The man shouted_loudly and said: ‘What do you want from me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I ask you: Promise before God that You will not hurt me.’
9Jesus asked him: ‘What is your name?’ He said: ‘My name is Legion, because we are many evil_spirits.’ 10The evil_spirit asked Jesus and begged Him not to send them away from that land. 11There were many pigs on the hills. 12The evil_spirits begged Jesus and asked Him: ‘Please let us go into the pigs. We want to go into them.’ 13Jesus said they could go. The evil_spirits came out of the man and they went into the pigs. There were about 2 000 pigs. The pigs ran up the mountain and into the lake and they all drowned.
14The men who looked after the pigs ran away, and they told the news to all the people in the towns and on the farms. The people of the towns came to see what had happened. 15When the people came to Jesus, they saw the man who had had demons in him. He was wearing clothes and there were no more demons in him. He was not mad anymore. And all the people became afraid. 16The people who saw what happened told the other people what had happened to the man with the demons and the pigs. 17Then the people asked Jesus and begged Him to go away from their land. 18Jesus got into the boat. The man who had had the demons in him begged Jesus and asked if he could go with Him. 19But Jesus said no. He told the man: ‘Go to your home and to your family. Tell them what the Lord has done for you. Tell them that God was good to you.’ 20The man went away to the places near the Ten Cities and he told the people what Jesus had done for him. Everyone was amazed.
Jesus heals a girl and a woman
(Also in Matthew 9:18-26; Luke 8:40-56)
21Then Jesus got into the boat again and they went to the other side of the lake. When He got out of the boat, a lot of people came to Him on the beach. 22Jairus, one of the leaders of the synagogue, also came to Jesus. When he saw Jesus, he knelt on the ground before Jesus. 23He begged Jesus and asked Him: ‘My daughter is very sick and she is going to die. Please come and put your hands on her so she can get well and live.’ 24Jesus went with Jairus. There was a crowd of people who went with them.
25One of them was a woman who had been sick for 12 years. She continued to bleed. 26She had gone to many doctors, but they only hurt her and made her problems bigger. She had paid them all the money that she had but she did not get better. 27Someone told her about Jesus and she went into the crowd of people behind Him and she touched his clothes. 28She said to herself: ‘If I can just touch his clothes, I will be healed.’ 29Immediately the blood stopped flowing and she knew that her body was healed.
30Jesus felt power going out from Him. He turned to the crowd of people and He asked: ‘Who touched my clothes?’ 31His disciples answered Him and said: ‘Look at how many people are near You and touch You. Why do you ask: “Who touched Me?” ’ 32Jesus looked at the people around Him to see who had done it. 33When the woman saw what had happened to her, she started to tremble because she was afraid. She came to Jesus and knelt before Him and she told Him what had happened. 34Jesus said to the woman: ‘You are now well because you believe in Me. I pray that God will give you peace. You are healed and you will no longer have pain.’
35While Jesus was speaking to the woman, some people of Jairus came from his home and they said to him: ‘Your daughter has died. Do not ask the Teacher to come. Do not waste his time.’ 36Jesus heard what they said but He said to Jairus: ‘Don't be afraid, just believe in Me.’
37Jesus told Peter, James and John, the brother of James, to come with Him. He took no other people with Him. 38When they got to the house of Jairus they saw the people crying and mourning and making a lot of noise. 39Jesus went into the house and He asked the people: ‘Why do you cry and mourn like this? The child is not dead. She is sleeping.’
40But the people laughed at Jesus because He said she was sleeping.
Jesus told all the people to go out of the house. Then He took the father and the mother of the child with Him and also the 3 disciples who were with Him. They went into the room where the child was. 41Jesus took the child's hand and He said to her: ‘Talitha, koum.’ It means ‘Little girl, get up’. 42The girl immediately got up and walked. She was 12 years old. The people were amazed. 43But Jesus told them not to tell anyone what had happened. Then He said: ‘Give her some food to eat.’
