We get to know God as the God on a journey with his people. He also reveals himself as such. We look at some of the many examples cited in the Bible:
God calls an ordinary man, Abram, who had to obey and trust him for a future that was only possible on the basis of God’s promise of blessing and presence. (Genesis 12:1-5,7)
God transforms the negative events of Joseph’s life into keeping his people alive and later moving them to the land he promised them on oath. (Genesis 45:5, 7-8; and 50:20,24)
According to the book of Deuteronomy, God repeatedly tells them about his plan and promises for them through Moses, and also describes how he will guide and bless them. He even went ahead of them to search out places for them to camp. (Deuteronomy 1:33)
God reaffirmed his presence to Joshua (Joshua 1:9) and conquered Jericho, kings’ armies and gave the land to his people. He sends leaders, kings and prophets to guide them in his will, counsel and admonitions – too many to mention here. All that is required is, “Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshipped … and serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:14)
He still wants to lead and bless each of us. But how reverent and obedient are we to Him?
Prayer: God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, you are also my God! Let your Spirit determine my conduct and lead me in full surrender to you, in reverence and faithfulness. In Jesus’ name. Amen
