₂₃Jesus answered him, “Whoever loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and my Father and I will come to him and live with him. ₂₄Whoever does not love me does not obey my teaching. And the teaching you have heard is not mine, but comes from the Father, who sent me.

₂₅“I have told you this while I am still with you. ₂₆The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and make you remember all that I have told you.

₂₇“Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid. ₂₈You heard me say to you, ‘I am leaving, but I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father; for he is greater than I. ₂₉I have told you this now before it all happens, so that when it does happen, you will believe.

₁After this, Jesus went to Jerusalem for a religious festival. ₂Near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem there is a pool with five porches; in Hebrew it is called Bethzatha. ₃A large crowd of sick people were lying in the porches — the blind, the lame, and the paralysed. ₅A man was there who had been ill for 38 years. ₆Jesus saw him lying there, and he knew that the man had been ill for such a long time; so he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”

₇The sick man answered, “Sir, I have no one here to put me in the pool when the water is stirred up; while I am trying to get in, somebody else gets there first.”

₈Jesus said to him, “Get up, pick up your mat, and walk.” ₉Immediately the man got well; he picked up his mat and started walking.
